British supercapacitor

Augmented Optics, a British technology firm, has teamed up with researchers from the universities of surrey and Bristol to develop a new type of supercapacitor that can be fully charged in minutes, which could potentially be applied to electric cars which currently take too long to charge.

The team was not said to be looking to solve the problem of electric cars taking too long to charge, but they quickly realized the advantages of the technology in automotive applications.”Although the range will not necessarily increase, the charging time will be reduced to two to three minutes,” they said. There are already buses with supercapacitors in China, but the range is not as strong as the team claims.

According to sources, the team hopes to use their technology to create a prototype electric vehicle that can “get 150 miles on a charge in a matter of seconds.”Augmented Optics CEO Jim Heathcote said the team was developing the technology in secret and filed for a patent last week. They are now seeking commercial partners to further develop the technology in electric vehicles.
